The first trailer for Netflix’s Best of the Best is here, and the upcoming Bollywood dance movie looks even more fun than expected.
Starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia, with Hasan Minhaj serving as a co-writer, Best of the Best takes audiences into the world of collegiate Bollywood dance teams in the United States.
And based on the trailer, the movie is fully embracing that very specific college experience.
The story follows two childhood best friends who try out for UCLA’s Bollywood dance team, where they quickly find themselves navigating intense rehearsals, competitions, team dynamics and the pressure to stand out.
There is plenty of comedy along the way, too.
At one point, the trailer jokes about the familiar personalities found on Bollywood dance teams, including the “random white person” who somehow knows more about Indian culture than everyone else.
Beyond the jokes, however, the trailer shows off what could become one of the movie’s biggest draws: the dancing.
The choreography featured throughout the trailer looks energetic and competitive, while the overall tone feels lighthearted and fun. There are definitely some Pitch Perfect vibes here, just set within the world of collegiate Bollywood dance.
But Best of the Best also appears to be about much more than winning a competition.
Friendship is clearly at the center of the story. The trailer shows tension developing between the two best friends as the pressure of being on the team grows, while also emphasizing how much they rely on one another.
That element could feel especially familiar to anyone who participated in cultural clubs or dance teams during college. These organizations can become more than extracurricular activities, they can also be where some of the strongest friendships and communities are formed.
And that is what makes the representation in Best of the Best particularly exciting.
There have been plenty of movies about college friendships, dance competitions and trying to find your place on campus. This time, South Asian American college culture gets to be at the center of that story.
For viewers familiar with the collegiate Bollywood dance world, there are already plenty of recognizable details in the trailer. For everyone else, Best of the Best looks ready to introduce audiences to that world through dance, comedy, competition and friendship.
If the trailer is any indication, this could be a very fun one.
