Himesh Patel has a major role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and for the British Indian actor, being part of a movie of this scale carries an important meaning.
Patel, who is Gujarati, plays the second-in-command to Matt Damon’s Odysseus in the film. His casting also places a South Asian actor prominently within Nolan’s interpretation of the ancient Greek epic.
The casting of The Odyssey has sparked plenty of conversation online, with some questioning the decision to cast actors from different backgrounds in a story rooted in Greek mythology. Patel’s casting has been part of that debate, alongside discussions surrounding other members of the cast, including Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page.
But Patel has also highlighted what seeing a South Asian actor in a film like The Odyssey could mean for younger audiences.
Speaking about representation, the actor reflected on growing up without seeing people who looked like him in movies of this scale. He said he hopes Indian children growing up in the United States and United Kingdom can now watch a movie like The Odyssey and see themselves represented, something that would have meant the world to him as a child.
That makes Patel’s role particularly significant for South Asian audiences who have historically seen limited representation in major Hollywood blockbusters.
Nolan has also addressed the larger conversation surrounding his casting choices.
The director explained that his goal with an adaptation like The Odyssey is to make the best film possible in the most sincere way he can, while acknowledging that his version will naturally be different from how another filmmaker might approach the same story.
“That’s what adaptation is,” Nolan said.
He also pushed back against assumptions surrounding depictions of the ancient world, arguing that cultural prejudices should not automatically be elevated simply because they come from the past. Instead, Nolan said he wanted to approach the story in a modern way and move away from some of those assumptions.
At the same time, the casting conversation has also raised a separate question about Greek representation in a film based on one of Greece’s most famous stories.
For South Asian audiences, however, Patel’s comments highlight another side of the conversation: the impact that simply seeing someone who looks like you can have, particularly in a movie on this scale.
And for Indian kids watching The Odyssey, seeing Himesh Patel alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars could make this epic feel just a little more representative of the world they know.
