Rani Mukerji is adding a new honor to her impressive career.
The Bollywood star is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from La Trobe University during the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The recognition will celebrate Mukerji’s contributions to Indian cinema as well as her humanitarian work.
The actress has spent decades entertaining audiences, but many of her films have also used storytelling to highlight important social issues.
Speaking about the upcoming honor, Mukerji reflected on having the opportunity to make films centered around resilience, passion and the courage of people overcoming difficult circumstances.
And looking back at some of her most memorable roles, it is easy to see that theme throughout her career.
The Mardaani films have seen Mukerji play a police officer taking on serious crimes, including child trafficking and violence against women. In Hichki, she portrayed a teacher with Tourette syndrome who faces prejudice while working with a class of underprivileged students.
Then there is Black, in which Mukerji portrayed a deaf and mute woman pursuing an education, and Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, which told the story of an Indian mother fighting a foreign child welfare system to regain custody of her children.
La Trobe University Chancellor John Brumby also highlighted the impact of Mukerji’s filmography while announcing the honor.
“Rani Mukerji’s remarkable body of work has transcended entertainment to spark important conversations around social justice, equality and inclusion,” Brumby said.
He also praised her impact on cinema and commitment to humanitarian causes, calling her an “exceptional recipient” of the honorary doctorate.
Mukerji is expected to officially receive the honor on August 14th during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
For an actress whose filmography has repeatedly combined entertainment with stories about resilience and social issues, the upcoming recognition marks another major career moment.
And come August, Bollywood fans may have a new way to address her: Dr. Rani Mukerji.
